Ann: Hello Mrs. Roosevelt, what a great introduction!
Eleanor Roosevelt: Yes indeed, we have formed quite the bond over the years both when I was in the body and thereafter.
You find perhaps my coming to you in this time of suffering and opportunity to be a bit odd, but remember that I, along with my entire generation, suffered through the horrors of WWII, and the parallels are frighteningly obvious.
There are plenty to make those comparisons for you, but what I want to stress is the differences between that time and this.
When we confronted Hitler and Mussolini, we did so only after intolerable provocation. We avoided conflict until it was forced upon us. When you drop a bomb or several on the US Navy fleet on American soil, you know very well that we will be coming for you.
I note particularly that we did not go to war to the prevent the annihilation of the Jewish people, more shame to us. We waited until we were threatened and then came in on the grounds of self defense.
In our defense, we wanted to avoid another World War like the previous one where our boys died for nothing in the rotting stench of the rat infested trenches of Europe, our boys and theirs, sons, lovers, husbands, friends.
But we failed to see the difference between that time and ours. The First World War was a local war gone bad. The Second was a progressive war of aggression that threatened the entire continent and cannibalized the entire Jewish population. We have the benefit of that hard won wisdom now, and we are using it.
This time the ante is upped exponentially by the threat of nuclear destruction. We must weigh carefully the lessons of the failure of appeasement in the previous global conflict with the knowledge that this particular madman has access to nuclear weapons and can destroy the entire planet. This time we much walk that fine line, blocking off the advance of the Russian army while doing our best to coral its leader within his own country.
It is a delicate dance that was going to happen eventually. To be ready we must come together, a fiercesome task in this age of deliberate misinformation and manipulation by those who hope to gain or retain power in their own political cabals which misuse those who can be led by lies.
It is for us now to stand up as best we can against every lie that comes our way. Our government has sought out this tactic by broadcasting Russian preplanned tactics and assaults. It is the light of day that its insane leader cannot stand, and so he has tried to command the airwaves and the electronic communications that make him so much more powerful in one way but also more susceptible to exposure in another.
We are doing alright, do not lose heart. We are taking this fight where we find it. We are not stepping back in appeasement nor recklessly charging in. It is a fine line, and the man leading our country has come to this appointed time as no other could. He understands war and its sacrifices. He understands the uselessness of appeasement, and he knows, as only one could who experienced it in his lifetime, the horrors of nuclear destruction.
I come to you to tell you that we have our leader. He will not be perfect, he will make mistakes, but he was born to serve in this role in this appointed time, and with the grace of the gods he serves, the people he leads, and the leaders with whom he has made common cause, he will get us through this narrow place between abject surrender and full-fledged nuclear war into the light of a new day.
