Franklin Delano Roosevelt: The Tide Has Turned

Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial*

Ann: President Roosevelt?**

President Roosevelt: Yes, Ann. We do have our ways, we folks in spirit, of getting your attention. Like the song *** said, many folks believed that "Mr. Roosevelt is gonna save us all," but that was not my view.

Nevertheless I believed strongly that we could pull ourselves out of the downward spiral that was the depression if we could all pull together, and that was my purpose in everything I did. From the war to the Tennessee Valley Association creating employment, I wanted to engage our citizens in working for a better future for all of us and in empowering the government to do the same.

Needless to say I would hardly recognize the world today where even science has assumed a political taint. Yet looking closer, it is perhaps not surprising, for it is always possible for evil to get the upper hand if we are not vigilant, if we are lazy and if we assume that somebody else will take care of it.

Today that evil has been emboldened. That happens when we get to a pass where caring for each other is a sucker’s game, where my health has nothing to do with yours, and my responsibility is only to myself, my wants, and the image I want to project in the world.

We are turning that around now. We listened recently to the four patriots who fought for us, who bled and died for us, and there is nowhere to hide their truth. Through their images and words, we watch as they valiantly fought off an assault on our undefended capital. These are the true heroes in our country, the ones who should stand upright, covered in the glory.

It will take time for these voices to percolate and penetrate, for these whose ears and hearts are currently closed to begin to awaken to what has been happening around them. It may take more pain or even bloodshed to trigger their awakening, but between those who will not be silenced and a President who has the well-being of all of our citizens at heart, the tide will turn.

The least among us have now a powerful voice in our current President. Those who are disabled, little ones whose well-being has not been on the radar for many years, among others, have now a champion. Eventually his compassion and empathy, his love for his fellow citizens will permeate the far reaches of the country. Those who refuse to hear will either be left behind or, if necessary, constrained so that their blind hatred can no longer direct the course of the day.

His agenda is more than a chicken in every pot though that remains a critical element. It is finally the real version of no child left behind. There have been many who espoused the notion and tried to put it into practice, but only now has the concept been given legs.****

Do not underestimate its power, my friends. When someone reaches out their hand to you and your child with love in their heart, you will not forget them and when the time comes, you will be eager to return the favor. Like begets like, and you have in your president one who refuses to hate.

Wait for it. Be patient. The rewards will come.

**Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882 – 1945), often referred to by his initials FDR, was an American politician who served as the 32nd president of the United States from 1933 until his death in 1945. A member of the Democratic Party, he won a record four presidential elections and became a central figure in world events during the first half of the 20th century. Roosevelt directed the federal government during most of the Great Depression, implementing his New Deal domestic agenda in response to the worst economic crisis in U.S. history. Wikipedia.

FDR, an American hero who "betrayed his own class" of privilege for the betterment of all Americans especially those out of work, disabled, and elderly with no life savings. Biden has said himself he is modeling is presidency after FDR.

FDR was an extraordinary man, both humbled and transformed by disabling polio that changed a man of physical vigor, ambition, power and privilege, to one who was never was to walk again and essentially confined to a wheelchair. Learning about FDR's life is both moving and inspiring. Ken Burns made a 10 part series called the Roosevelts. Worth watching!

That pretty much sounds like something Jesus would say. I wish more people actually thought and behaved like this. I think it is going to take a little more of people seeing that "right makes might" actually wins elections before we see a larger shift. I am starting to be more hopeful that this might actually happen, which is more than I could say a couple years ago.

So very encouraging and heartening.

Ann, I wonder if you might or might not be a history buff; the spirits coming through to you must be enormously strong and recognizable as to cause little question.

Absolutely astonishing and amazing in itself regardless.

Thank you both so very much.

Thanks, Laurie. I am not a history buff and remember very little from school though these folks are all, as you say, recognizable by name. I looked FDR up on Wikipedia to get some background after the fact. In this case a few days ago I heard a song with the line about Roosevelt, and it kept playing over and over in my head day in and day out. Then yesterday Anita said FDR had something to say. I am in awe of the whole process, so appreciative of readers like you and the wonderful comments. Thanks!
