"Keep your head up, bless the humanity that keeps you humble,

and go on out there and do what you came here to do."

Ann: Bobby, I am a total slug compared to you, don’t understand why you haven’t contacted someone with a little more get up and go.

Bobby: Well, I have done so, but return here to see how the other half lives.

Ann: You mean the sort that can stay in bed till noon if given the chance?

Bobby: Why, yes, that is precisely what I mean. You think of it as sloth, and I was taught that way too, but now I wonder if we might all do a little better, even be more productive if we took the time for doing nothing, enjoying our place on the planet. Not that everyone has the luxury of that given the exigencies of the day, but it is precious, even sacred time if it is given to you and not to be disparaged.

Ann: I love hearing your voice. What did you come to say?

Bobby: I am watching the horror show that is being put on by the arrogant administration now in power and directed by those who wish to undermine the fabric of our democracy. Lord knows there are plenty of rents in that fabric, but it has been patched and rewoven through the years and has held up pretty well in that process. I weep for those who will pay the price of this grab for power, and I want to talk to you about maintaining your own.

Power is not just external - though the lack of it in the hands of honorable people is what has led us to this pass. We must lift our eyes past the slogans and shiny objects that are presented to distract us from what is happening which is a shoring up of power in the hands of the wealthy and unscrupulous few.

Use your reason and intuition to take back power over your lives. Look behind every picture, every statement and make up your own mind. Power will shift but vigilance must remain just as strong, for everyone is vulnerable to the intoxication of power.

No sooner than the government changes hands and comes into the hands of those now fighting for truth, justice, and economic parity than some will grab for their own outsized share of the pie. Safeguards are needed now, not just for this collection of treasonous clowns, but for the honorable men and women who follow them who can nonetheless succumb to the siren song of power.

Power is like the virus. It is an equal opportunity destroyer. The only thing that will keep it in check is the consistent regulation by those who have regulated their own power centers, those who have come to the work of the nation with a mission of love and justice in mind, those who wish to preserve a system of government where everybody has a fighting chance and where those who would undermine the whole can be stopped before they get started.

I love the idea of this country. I came from privilege and yet found more in common with the people of the Martin Luther King Jr movement than with many in my own class. Devotion to God is paramount, must be paramount for all who want to live life on an upward trajectory. Let the example of John Lewis lead the way.

Ann: Did you know him?

Bobby: Yes, I knew him. He was a firebrand and a force to be reckoned with. I wish I had had the privilege of seeing up close the remarkable journey that he took from sharecropper’s son to resistance fighter all the way to the conscience of Congress. He was our North Star even then. May we all emulate his journey in our own way. Nothing could be a more fitting memorial.

Ann: Bobby, I am embarrassed to say that I let all this get me down sometimes and just retreat. And I have a privileged life and no excuse.

Bobby: Ann, no one keeps fighting all the time, no one has a courageous heart in every hour of every day. The thing is to get up each morning and do it again, go down to the mat for truth, for real justice and real freedom in every way you can. Take the light and the dark with you but go.

Ann: OK, this is whiny and I know you came to say something for the blog, but can you help me with my undisciplined life which leads to health problems and darkness every time? Then I resolve to do better, do it for a while, feel better, fall off the wagon again. I get depressed, but I won’t fix it.

Bobby: Ann, Ann. Don’t you realize that everyone has demons, that no one walks a straight line to God and salvation? Cry in private, do what you need to do, but keep lifting yourself up to do what you have been asked to do.

Ann: How did you stand it?

Bobby: I didn’t, Ann, I didn’t. I wept, I railed, I cursed God in all his mighty arrogance and indifference in letting a world spin itself into waste, fraud, mayhem, and the murder of children. Children, children who had no say in how they were treated, people whose legacy was denigrated, ignored and their families left to disintegrate into poverty, illness and addiction.

I was angry so I turned myself into an automaton for people without a voice. I ran myself into the ground and further and would have kept on doing so. That sounds noble, but it was not. We all cope with our demons in different ways. You get up every day and put something on this blog.

The day will come when you won’t need your addictions. It may be the day you die and that is ok, you are doing the work you came to do. So don’t let those very small matters derail your big work. And it is big. Changing even one human heart is the accomplishment of a lifetime so keep your head up, bless the humanity that keeps you humble, and go on out there and do what you came here to do.

Thank you Ann. Never underestimate the hearts you lift by bringing through the inspiration and hope of the greats during these dark times. Their language is so authentic, characteristic, and eloquent. That in itself inspires. So grateful they are with us. RFK has always been an inspiration to me. Felt our country was truly lost when we lost him. My deep gratitude to you Ann and those who come forward to lift us up and keep us from despair. Love to you! 🙏🌹💗
