Ann: Anita* says that you guys have an urgent message.
John McCain: You first, Elijah.
Elijah Cummings: Thank you, John. This is an important day, a sacred day, a day which went down in infamy for causing the death of one of the great crusaders for equality, peace, and justice. But that is not the only reason to mark this day. Ann, here, had no idea of what happened on this day 52 years ago. Oh, she knew about the murder following close on the heels of other murders of our most hopeful leaders, but even after she heard so movingly from Bobby himself, until Anita’s guides stepped in, the connection was lost on her. And it is an important one.
It has been 52 years, 52 years, people, and still we are marching. Still we see murders of the helpless unaddressed, crime allowed to run rampant in neighborhoods without resources, and children hungry and without an effective education.
Yes, its been 52 years, but we have been waiting and working, and this time it will be different. This time there is no hiding these crimes under the glib lies of those who have no fear of being held to account. This time the truth is there to everyone to see. Indeed, that truth cannot be avoided as it stands out in horrific living color on our computers and television screens.
I am heartened beyond words at the numbers and diversity of those who have come out of their homes to say, “No more!” Once again the children will lead us with their energy and clear-eyed vision. Guns, troops, unprovoked attacks, and unrestrained power have no place on the streets of our country.
I am asking each and every one of you to follow these young leaders as they insist upon structural and lasting change. I ask too that you hold all members of this society, black and white, awake and asleep, in your hearts with love. We must move together.
John: Eloquently said, Elijah. I won’t say I can’t hold my fellow Republicans in love, but I will say, damn it, that they better get their asses in gear or face the roiling consequences of all our chickenshit leader’s justifications for martial rule. Boys, you aren’t boys. You’re a bunch of old men who are clinging with soon to be skeleton fingers to the disappearing remnants of power. And the only way you can see fit to do this is to grind your heels on the faces - or necks - of anyone who wants their fair share.
It cannot last, my friends. The military itself will call a halt, or so I pray, and many of its leaders already have. When will you stand up and say to this president, “Enough! You have overstepped your power, and our allegiance to you is no longer required by the constitution.” Get on the right side of history before it’s all the way out the door, and you are left sitting in the dust when the door slams shut.
There is a contagion rampant among my former colleagues, and it’s not Covid-19. It is weak-kneed cowardice and self-satisfied greed. Take a flier, and for once honor your oath of office and your duty to the people of this land. All the people, my friends.
You will not be able to hold for very long on with might, for this country does not (yet) rest on might alone. I would like to say that you can be a part of change, but you are too far gone for that. The best you can do is to step out of the way and slink off to some deserted cave where you can lick your wounds and hope that your God won't find you. And that’s another fantasy you can kiss goodbye, because wherever you go He will be there with you, shining a light on the darkness you have perpetrated not only in this country but on your own souls. Ask Him for forgiveness. It is all you have left.

I wish John had not voted for the massive tax cut under Trump. It broke my heart. It is easy to shout from the sidelines that his colleagues need to change but I was shocked he voted inline with Trump so many times. Like Jesus said earlier about forgiveness. I can’t forgive his soul but not his actions.
Those are some powerful words from John McCain and Mr. Cummings. I hope John is correct and those who want to hold onto power for the sake of greed and avarice, along with those who never have been held to account, will see the new paradigm being ushered in and decide their best course of action is to get out of the way. I would also like to see them being held to account, but Lady Karma moves at her own pace and it is not my place to pronounce judgment. They will have to balance the scales, they cannot escape from that requirement.
I soooooo miss these two men...for so many reasons. Thank you for sharing. God bless us all. 😇🌎💜💜💜
This is exactly and so much more what I have been desperately hoping to hear for nearly four years.
My profound thanks, Ann , to you and each of these incredible beings.
