This time we have the opportunity

Ann: President Lincoln?*
President Lincoln: Yes, Ann, thank you for allowing me to spend some time with you here. I have come because I sense a letdown among those who saw victory in the election as the end of the fight. Well, it is not the end and never could be, for the fight for human rights is and always will be a work in progress. But it can be the beginning of the end of state-blessed intolerance and persecution, and on that you have made a good start.
It remains for those whose hearts remain open and whose eyes are willing to recognize that the mob is never a means for justice if its goal is to silence a section of our population by whatever means necessary. There have been ups and downs to the waves that have governed human rights in this country but, in spite of setbacks, even unconscionable acts of horror, there is a core conscience in this nation that cannot and will not bless a lynch mob when it is crying out for blood.
Yes, there will be those who glory in the mob, who see as a zero sum game the idea of human rights in this country. They believe that if you have rights then they do not. It is this is idea that we must confront at every opportunity, for until we are all disabused of this false premise, we will not be able to embrace democracy.
We need not deny a place at the table to those who do not see eye to eye with us, for to do so is to play into the hands of the sloganeers, but we must insure that everyone at the table is bound by the same rules, rules based on truth and respect. Without these pillars anchoring us to righteousness, there can be no forward progress.
Let us move forward together then with these values uppermost in our minds. Always we come back to the truth as our lodestar. We support no lie no matter whose ox is gored. And we root out and expose any act based on deception and oppression. Everyone has to earn their place at the table, and when they do, they reap the well-earned benefits that flow from a fact based system.
My friends, if these recent and unfortunate “rebels” are allowed to pursue their goals to their natural conclusions, they will find the boots of oppression on their own necks just as surely as they intended to hold their black and brown brothers down for the count. Their misconceptions need reformation from the ground up, and constant vigilance will be required to expose their false belief in justified oppression.
There will never be a perfect solution, for there will always be aggrieved parties looking to take more of the pie. But if we can rear our children in the understanding the truth is holy, that oppression is never tolerated, that all must work for a living and come to the table with multiple and various talents in hand, we will defeat this tide of intolerance that threatens the very fabric of our nation.
We have been here before, and every time we take several steps forward. True, we may backslide some, but still we move forward. This time we must do more. We must codify the values that have made us strong and root out without favour or malice those who would destroy our democracy.
So I ask you not to despair, not to give up, not to even think of resting on any non-existent laurels. Vigilance will always be required, for there will always be those wanting to take a short cut through the very principles that have taken us through crisis after crisis. We may have been left bloodied and bowed in these wars, but we have not been beaten, and we have lived to fight another day.
Today is that day. This time we have the opportunity to set guardrails that will protect future generations. I lend my support from this side where the long view presides. And from that viewpoint, I am more hopeful than I have been for a long time.
All we have to do is stay steady.
