Advice From Spirit(s)

I have been discouraged and drifting lately, rereading old mystery novels and doing not much else. Spirit, can you help me?

Surprise! And not just any old spirit, this is your old buddy, John McCain. Bet you didn’t think I’d be showing up at this juncture when you’re really looking for some hifalutin spiritual type and here you just get good old John.  But, Annie, I am just the guy you want ’cause what you need is the Straight Talk Express.

          You don’t get everything you want. Not nearly, not know how, not anytime, on any planet, or even in your own imagination ‘cause you're just not that dumb. Life takes you places you don’t want to go. And if you look around, you can see the world taking itself places it might not want to go either.

          But it really doesn’t matter ‘cause go you will. It’s just up to you how you plan to take the trip. I bitched, complained and acted out, as they say now, but it didn’t make a whit of difference. You get served what you get served and you gotta figure out how to make a nice meal out of it or you’ll starve to death.

          So stop staring soulfully into the abyss, and start putting your head and hands together to see what you can do in this situation you find yourself to make it better.

Harriet Tubman: Well, chile, if I balked every time something i didn’t want come down my way, I never would have got out of bed in the mornin’. And I can see that right about now you think that might be a right nice thing to do.

But it ain’t, chile, it ain’t. You can try pulling them covers over your head, but this ole life will find you anyway, so you better start takin’ a hand and making it something that you can live with, that you can be proud of, so that, when it's done, the Lord can say to you, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

          I know that ain’t the language you use these days, but you know what I mean. Get yo’self goin’ cause time’s a wastin’.
