John The Apostle:* Answering The Call

When you hear such a call,

you have no choice but to answer

if you are to continue to live.

Ann: Jesus, is it ok to allow this John** in?

Jesus: Yes. (Smiling) This is the John I knew and loved. A young man of sterling qualities and stalwart mien. He has something to share, please hear him out.

Ann: John?

John the Apostle: Yes. Thanks for taking my call. I understand that you have many such calls on your time and that I am not exactly at the top of the list of well-known figures. Much of the time people hear my name and think I must be John the Baptist - though I have almost nothing in common with that great giant of faith and prophecy other than a soul deep connection to our rabbi and teacher, Jesus of Nazareth.

I was a young man not yet in my twentieth year when I and my brother turned away from our lives to follow this man. Think about what that meant, not only for us, but for our families, our loved ones, and, in my case, the love of my heart. Our departure under such circumstances caused much sadness and confusion, even despair.

Some of you may have seen loved ones leave the nest and go off to parts unknow to follow an uncharted course. Many of you have grieved at the loss, but I say to you that not grief but understanding is called for. Or perhaps you were the one that left the beaten path and the expectations of your family to answer a call that was larger than those oh so precious connections. Or sometimes you remain in place but everything has changed because now you have heard.

When you hear such a call, you have no choice but to answer if you are to continue to live. Oh yes, you could remain breathing, confined to a body with your heart rotting in your chest, but such a choice is a choice not of life but of death.

Even a very young person can hear such a call. Or (smiling) the very old among you. It does not matter your age, stage, or station, such a call is the call to life. Rejoice if you have heard and responded to such a call even with all its attendant sorrows, for you have chosen to return to Source, Yggdrasil, to the Great Spirit who is the founder and creator of the love that centers all existence.

I stand before you as a young man who heard that call, who answered but who suffered and did not understand, who made mistakes, some of infinite proportions, but who remained true to the calling and retuned again and again to try again to follow. This path is the way, the truth, and the light.

Listen for that call however it may come. It is your life’s blood.

*John the Apostle or Saint John the Beloved was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus according to the New Testament. Generally listed as the youngest apostle, he was the son of Zebedee and Salome. His brother was James, who was another of the Twelve Apostles. Wikipedia.
