What we truly desire is connection,
no matter how terrifying that knowledge may be.
Ann: You understand addiction.
Richard Burton: Yes, indeed, none better. Protection, we do it for protection because we can’t believe that we can make it on our own without providing a respite, a pleasure, a handle and safe harbour to get us through.
And it does help, or so we think, until we feel the steel jaws of the the trap slam shut, and we can no longer come and go at will. And yet the real trap comes when we ascribe significance to the addictive substance when we can no longer understand that we are the same with or without it, that we have what we need with or without it.
This is not a bad thing because every time we live through one of these hellacious cycles we are reminded that we do not have control, that surrender to that understanding is our only way out .
So when you hit that dead end, ask, “What do you want me to do?” I think you may be surprised to hear the answer will come back as "Whatever you truly desire."
For what you truly desire is connection no matter how terrifying that knowledge may be, no matter how many times you run back to the false security of your addiction of choice. You will know it when it comes upon you no matter where you try to hide.
That power came upon me at various time, particularly when speaking the words of the great authors, those who had felt that power and transmitted it through written word. I knew it by the thrill that ran through me when the long dead atavistic hairs on the back of my neck stood up in recognition, in awareness of Other. I could not hold my life in the road except in fits and starts, but in those moments, I saw the road, and I live on it now - very happily, I might add.
You do not need to wait. Many of you have had the same experience in other venues in this life and in other incarnations. Your task is always the same: stay with it as long as possible then run back to home base if necessary in order to keep yourself on the planet. Rinse, wash, repeat until fear is assuaged.
Mortality. That was the bugaboo in my life, and, did you but know it, perhaps also in yours.
Think about it. What is it you fear? Doesn't it come down to loss of power, loss of control, somebody else telling you what to do? And what provides that loss in the most clear cut terms more than the sure and certain knowledge that your life will be taken from you without a by your leave whenever the fates so decree?
You can hedge and cavil, make plans, have a drink or a bite of forbidden fruit to try to take the edge off, but nothing will suffice for the simple reason that none or us are in control, nor will we ever be.
So the only solution is to give up the ghost and cast your lot with your angels, your guides, and your own better nature. You will be amazed at your freedom when you no longer suffer under chains that seemed to offer protection but which in fact simply kept your locked up, away from your Source.
The real protection* is that which works from the inside out, connection and faith that generates for freedom.
