"We must cleave to the truth as best we can see it,
regardless of where we find it
and whose ox is gored in the process."
Ann: Justice Ginsburg, you have something for the blog?
Justice Ginsburg: Yes, Ann, and for you also. These days of turmoil look to be endless, but nothing, witness my recent passing, is endless. The time is now, for those of you still with your feet upon the ground to take notice of how you can be of help.
I have come back a bit before my scheduled time because of the misconceptions held by many of you regarding of my supposedly untimely departure. I left at my appointed time to allow others, who might otherwise remain in the back ground, to take up the mantel of justice going forward. I hope to bring forward by these and other messages the benefit of my current perspective now which will hopefully be of assistance to those of your still in the midst of our country’s fight for survival.
Do not deceive yourselves, it is indeed a fight for survival, but perhaps not just in the way you have imagined. What has happened in our country is the deliberate alienation of interest groups which have more in common that otherwise did they but realize it.
Unfortunately, the news media and the internet are being used to turn fiction into alleged “fact” and lies into fabricated “truth.” It is now for us to take up the mantel of our democracy in the name of actual and demonstrable truth.
Therefore, when an event favors your point of view, hold up your sign saying. “Yes, this is truth.” If such event does not favor your argument, put up your other sign saying, “No, this is not truth.”
We must be utterly clear. Many think that if they own their own weaknesses, their world will come tumbling down around their ears because these inconvenient truths will be used by the other side whose fealty to truth has disappeared in their lust for power and fear of irrelevance. And that will happen, yet those who speak consistently, who hold their ground without resorting to treachery, will be the ones standing at the end of the day.
I do not say that it will be easy to do. I do say it is necessary. Fanatical adherence to the truth is the one and only basis for credibility. When those who have demonized their opponents are surprised by recognition of their plight, by accurate representation of their life experiences, some, not all, but some, will respond with inquiring minds because, when the current administration’s dark underbelly is exposed, as it surely will be, there will be no place to shelter in the fantasy land of deception being created by those that crank out one conspiracy theory after another.
This does not mean the liberal cause will triumph, that we will take over the country in a flood of jubilation and I-told-you-so surge. What it means is that a more measured approach, one that takes into account a wide variety of experiences will be able to meld itself into a coherent whole which has credibility as its watchword.
We must not point fingers or engage in a tit for tat reactions, however tempting that may be. We must cleave to the truth as best we can see it, regardless of where we find it and whose ox is gored in the process. We must leave our slogans and self-interest at the door. Nothing else will serve. We must model what we believe.
This is the messy road to democracy. If only one group models a faithful adherence to the truth as proved by facts on the ground, then that group will prevail in the long term.
