Doubt: How To Keep Out Of The Mud

Ann: Hi Richard, Anita* says there is bad stuff coming at me.

Richard Burton: And you don’t see it and would like to be left alone to get on with your life. Have I got that right?

Ann: Yeah, pretty much, so I guess that means there is bad stuff coming at me about to suck me in.

Richard: Yeah, pretty much, as you would say. When you feel that resistance to working, to connecting, you can be pretty sure there are some derailing goblins headed your way.

Ann: OK, I get that, but I need to do the laundry, clean up the kitchen, write up a list of meds, donate come clothes, etc. and I don’t want to do that either. I pretty much don’t want to do anything. It’s a miracle I ever get from point A to point B.

Richard: Well, love, I think you have to look at this pattern from the top, that is, from a bird’s eye view. What it amounts to is churning. Churning is an excellent delay tactic and can allow you to wallow in static nonsense for an indefinite period. This is not new. It has always taken you longer that your average bear to get started at anything, and some of that is your natural make up. You are not a natural do-bee. You need the down time to process the spiritual connection that your consciousness has not quite allowed you to recognize. This nonverbal work is not laziness as you sometimes think but your system adjusting.

And yet you cannot always tell the difference, so it is good that Anita pops in from time to time to get you back on track. What is happening now and has all day from the moment you came down the hill feeling that you did not believe “in this stuff” is that the dark energy that has been looking for an entrance all day has found a crack in your foundations.

So let’s look at that. You don’t believe that any of this is real? Really?

Ann: Gee Richard, I don’t know. Sometimes it seems internal, elevating, and beyond question when something that could not possibly come from my life experience. And then the little doubting voice says that it always uses my experience because I can’t connect with anything else.

Richard: Do you think I am real?

Ann: Yes, no, I don’t know, for God’s sake, don’t go away.

Richard: (Chuckling) Very concisely put. And I mean that literally because this is what the human animal copes with. Is it taste, touch, sight, and smell only or is there something else? We are material animals who need to relate, recognize, and communicate with the non-material components of the universe. And this need drives us from birth to death.

And in answer to the complaining questions you are about to spout, tell me this: could you live without these communications?

Ann: I would be bereft of purpose. I don’t know what I would do with myself, feel depression settling in just at the thought.

Richard: So that is your answer. The essential element to your survival, to everyone’s survival and thriving, is connection with the unseen, the non-material part of the universe of which yours truly is a representative. It is only natural that you, being you, rebel at having your feet held to the fire, but when you accept that fire as the necessary fuel to your birth, death and every movement in between, you will move along quite easily.

Ann: And yet I still fight it.

Richard: It’s the old surrender thing, love. You will give over when you entire system recognizes its home, and the concept of surrender is just a far distant and irrelevant memory because homecoming is everything.
