Harriet Tubman on the Presidency

So I thought we might benefit from someone who has seen it all, so I asked Mrs. Tubman.

"Go on out there and make a difference in yo' own world

cause that’s the world the president will come from."

Ann: What do you think makes a good president, Auntie?

Harriet Tubman: I done tole you and you ‘fraid to put it out there, but I’ll say it again.

You gotta have love in your heart and a brain in your head, and yo’ mouth needs to be able to connect the two. That ain’t easy cause most folks may have one or t'other but no sense in how to put the two together so’s that people can hear you out and want to follow.

You gots to be a leader. I was a leader, and I knows that it ain’t all it’s cracked up to be because some peoples hate you ad some think you should jes deliver them what they want on a silver platter without regard to anybody else.

But your real leader has something inside that peoples can see and believe. They makes you want to be betta than yo’self, they make you want to make the world betta than it is, and they makes you want to lay down everything you has so that Jesus Christ can show the world what righteousness is, where compassion lives, and how to bring down the holy spirit into you own life. That’s the kind of leader I want. Y’all see any of those?

Ann: Do you?

HT: I ain’t running and I ain’t votin’ (not that I evah could) but I’s here to help anyone who want a little jumpin' juice to get them movin’ down heaven’s highway. We got the folks out there who can do the job. We just have to see in our own hearts what we need, what we came for, and who we want to be and how we want our children to live. We jes need to be that person, and the politics will take care of itself.

A: Can you give me any names of people you like?

HT: I likes lots of ‘em, an' I ain’t gonna say ‘cept that I sure am partial to that li’l heavy set gal from Georgia. She sees like it is, and she tells it the same way, and she knows how to count and speak up when it ain’t been done. She’s the one I’d keep my eye on.

A: Stacy Abrams?

HT: Yep, she’s one of mine.

A: Anything else you want to say to us?

HT: I have half a mind to come back down and shove some sense into those folks who sees only the next thing they can grab for theyselves. That ain’t no way to influence nobody. All you peoples out there need to be working on behalf of someone else, don’t matter how you do it cause this is how lives change, one kindness, one truth at a time. So don’t sit around wondrin’ who’s gonna be president, go out there and make a difference in yo' own world cause that’s the world the president will come from.

So very true. I keep saying to be a genuine human being, one must have the capacity for compassion and the ability to think critically. I like that Aunty adds a voice to bring the two together.
