St. Catherine Of Siena: Small Gifts

"Try to return to the sacred space inside your own being,

the space that God created in your image only for you,

for, like the flowers, you are unique."

Ann: Hi, did you send me the dream with the flowers?

St. Catherine: No, I am Cathy now. And yes, I did, Ann, and they are such little flowers too, so easy to miss, buried as they are under green foliage, almost imperceptible to sight unless you move slowly and patiently, noticing each little gift along your way. Each of these little treasures is a universe of creation and love all in one little package if only we will slow down to see it.

At first it looked to you like a bank of green rushes and then to see, nestled under the green fronds, the sun flower, small but perfect with its golden center and velvet white petals. And then an elegant lady, violet blue, with a bright center sheath guarding its the small womb, the cradle of the next generation.

Ann: I woke up enjoying the little flowers and thought it was one of the strangest dreams I have ever had.

Cathy: No, not really. It is one of the purest expressions of God’s love that you have ever allowed yourself to receive. It is so hard for those of us on the planet, scrambling to get through the day with its myriad of tasks, to take the time to be with God’s creation. Certainly I was so preoccupied with my prayer, good works, and fear of tactile earthly pleasures that I walked past banks of such beauty without receiving any of what they offered until one day the sun hit one glorious white lily and my eyes were opened.

You have been asked to have a quiet day, resting and waiting as the Othila rune Reversed has suggested to you. No big moves today, no sweeps of spiritual elevation, no plummets into the slough of despond or grandiose plans, just a quiet return to the sacred space inside your own being, the space that God created in your image only for you, for, like the flowers, you are unique.

I know it is a lot to ask in this crazy world, but if each one of you could try to find this space, either inside your heart, in some heretofore unnoticed spot of nature, or even some lovely artifact that you walk by every day without a glance, you would be offering sacred gifts up to the planet and to the universe. Heaven knows we need a respite and a reminder of who we are and where we live. Please rest assured that, if you can manage to take a moment, your gifts will be received.

It need not take a special excursion. A lovely drawing, figurine, crystal, or photograph. Even the beauty of your own hands when you stop to marvel at their elegant and efficient construction and the many tasks that they do for you without complaint or recognition.

I am learning from here more about the glories of the creation that was gifted us on this planet and have and will make a point in subsequent incarnations to give thanks for the beauty and functionality that surrounds us.

I hope that each of you can find such a sacred space in your day and give thanks for it and for your life and for the consciousness that allows you to make common cause with God’s creation and the blessings he has brought among us.

I think angels and spirits and love inspire us to create sacred spaces and appreciate the world as a sacred space and its natural beauty. Even quietness becomes a sacred space. And music, and pets, A conversation, Good food, and a book or even a lecture or a flicker of a candle Or smoke from an alighted smudging Sage. Life is beautiful, isn’t It?
