"Ask to be held open for spirit’s mystery to engulf you, and
allow you to see, if only for an instant, the holy pattern."
Ann: St. Catherine, Anita* said you wanted to speak with me.
St. Catherine of Siena: Yes, child, I do, I want to talk to you about holiness. I feel you tonight awash with gratitude finding that what you thought was an affliction has in fact brought unexpected blessings, that what you saw as a daunting journey has been made possible, nay even joyful, by the helping hands extended to you so unexpectedly.
This is the clear and present evidence that you have welcomed holiness into your life, that you have not questioned the setback, allowed it to develop without your bemoaning your fate, and, lo, here come the helpers. And look, there is one behind him and then another behind her and another and another. And each one reaches out a hand to you and the spark that flies from one to the other reaffirms the heavenly contract that humans, yes, will suffer but also be welcomed home with heavenly mercies.
Do not spend time asking why the hurt, why the gifted salve. Ask instead to be held open for spirit’s mystery to engulf you and allow you to see, if only for an instant, the holy pattern. Then carry that memory with you when the light does not shine so brightly, and allow the remembered and felt knowledge of the presence of Christ to reside within you, and you will find that your heart will quiet and your being will glow with the remembered warmth of the Holy Spirit.
Ann: Thank you, Catherine. I will keep this with me to remind me and bring me back when my mind strays into dark places.
St.C: Cathy. I’m Cathy now, and we are friends.
