Attorney Darrow: Of graft and power and mad lunatics, there will never be a shortage as evidenced by your current day political party of the wealthy and the hangers on who hope to get to heaven on their coat tails. I shudder to think how the rafters up here will shake when that crowd makes its appearance!
“Father forgive them for they know not what they do,” Jesus said about his crucifiers. But these clowns? They know exactly what they are doing, and I wonder how the holy host will view their petitions when their final hours arrive.
The Lord is merciful, yes, that’s true. And it’s also true that, when I walked the earth, I didn’t hold much truck with thinking that you could make up for every bad thing you did while you were living by just counting on the goodness of the Lord to forgive you. I wasn’t even sure there was a Lord.
But one thing I knew and I knew it well: if we didn’t treat our neighbors as our brothers and our brothers as ourselves, one way or another, we would be held to account. With that in mind, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at my welcome here given my many failings.
I think most people are surprised. That’s because, living like we do, in the midst of all that we do to one another, we really can’t imagine a presence so loving, so powerful, so forgiving, that, when we are finally in its presence, we can only bow down in sorrow for the error of our ways.
And though we are forgiven, though we are understood, still we are held to account, not by some vengeful judge in the sky, but by the sorrow in our own souls for not being able do better, to connect with our better angels.
There’s really no excuse for that because those angels travel with us every moment of every day, and sometimes they carry us even when we don’t even see them coming or going after they have pulled us out of a mess.
But when they leave, we know we have been saved. Somehow we feel lighter, better able to take the world on again and do better.
I found that you don’t have to believe anything in particular, you just have to try to do justice in your life and that’s what I tried to do. Oh I fell down in shame over and over again, but I never stopped trying.
So when you see something like these fools following a necrotic pied piper, you start walking in the other direction, and we will all be the better for it whether we reside in this world or the next.
