"The laws that we create, endorse, and implement
are a reflection of our relationship with God."
Ann: Attorney Darrow? Anita* said you wanted to speak with me.
Attorney Darrow: Yes, I have been haunting Anita in various ways because, following on the heels of your conversation with Justice Ginsburg, I wanted to add what little bit I learned during my earthly sojourn as a lawyer, a counselor, and man who suffered many losses.
All of us come to this planet for a reason. Justice Ginsburg’s reason is overt, plain to see from the life she lived defending the rights of the underserved focusing as she did her considerable energies on expanding those rights and freedoms.
I came for a similar purpose but aimed at a slightly different angle. I came to let those in the religious establishments and government institutions know that their dominance, their domination over our lives was coming to an end. You notice I do not say religious commitment, or spiritual connection, I refer specifically to institutional oppression.
Have you noticed that institutions are built to protect rights, ostensibly the rights of all of us, but somehow devolve into protection the ruling class and smother the life out of those whose lives, whose inclinations, and whose livelihoods challenge their fidelity or lack thereof to the very basis upon which those institutions were created?
So it is today. The founding principles of our democracy have been perverted. The threats to individual liberties have never been any more at risk than they are now. Now is the time when lawyers who have sworn fealty to the law and its basis in the constitutional principles of equality and liberty must stand up and challenge the status quo.
I have been pleased to see that there are many of them coming to the fore. Little does he know it but Andrew Cuomo is evolving into such a crusader, Andrew Weisman, Jim Comey and many others are the same. Some of them were misguided in their implementation (it is never wise to get between an attorney and his ego), but many have seen the bastardization of the Department of Justice and have banded together to right the wrongs that have been inflicted upon that flawed institution which itself is not a stranger to corruption.
The laws that we create, endorse, and implement are a reflection of our relationship with God. When those laws diverge from their holy origins as they inevitably will, it is for us to right the ship. Elections, protests, legal challenges, and nonviolent non-compliance are the tools we possess to avoid revolution. For that is what awaits us if we ignore the rot in our legal system.
I ask each and every one of you to use all the tools you have to hand to clean out this rot, to accept nothing less than a responsive and honorable system of justice in this country. Change can be accomplished if purpose is true.
Ann: While I have you here, I thought you did not believe in God?
Attorney Darrow: Nothing could be further from the truth. I did not believe in the ongoing life of the body, but I knew the holiness of right from wrong - though to my sorrow, I did not always adhere to those tenants. I have seen the error of my ways, I have received the unutterable compassion of our Creator, and I have resolved to bring that compassion and its attendant justice to any who can receive my help in the world today.
I made strides in the evolution of my soul in my life as Clarence Darrow, but I also took some steps in the opposite direction. I work now to continue that forward momentum and to aid those of you still struggling with these issues as we all do.
