Gebo Rune, The Gift, Partnership
I heard John McCain and Robin Williams this morning, thanks to Anita* who told me they were waiting, but I could not figure out who I was supposed to talked to first. Moral: I don't have to figure it out. I just have to receive the gift as my rune pull, Gebo, reminded me. I keep pulling this rune, maybe they're trying to tell me something....
Ann: Robin? John?
Robin: Perhaps we could share the stage?
John: Certainly, I always liked collaboration, it’s how we got things done. Sadly, it’s in short supply these days. I was quite the fan, Robin, took my kids to see everything you did, starting with Mork and Mindy still one of my favorites.
Robin: And I can return the complement, old Straight Talk Express, a concept apparently gone with the Schwinn. We are definitely a couple of dinosaurs.
One thing about being dead is that you get to meet up with the people you have always wanted to know and you fit the bill there. John, I wonder if you know how many of us looked at what you endured and how you endured and found ourselves woefully lacking even as we had your example to emulate.
John: Yeah, and then I went off the rails in a big way.
Robin: We all do. I think that maybe what we are coming to say, the riffs and side trips that all of us take in life may not be side trips at all – and may hold the seeds of who we are meant to be. God knows, they keep us humble.
John: I had only to look at the people I hurt, the cautionary tales that I blew past to be able to say then and now that we are all the same. We all have demons, addictions, terrors, and betrayals. No matter how famous, revered, or crazy, we are all the same under the skin: lost and broken, seeking redemption.
Ann: Did you find it?
John: Annie, we all find it if we want it. Now, it’s not served up on a silver platter, all those new age junkies to the contrary. We have to ask, to reach out, to want it more than anything. And then we get it in this life or the next. Robin?
Robin: Amen, brother, you’re preaching’ to the choir. Many if not most of us in public life are out there asking to be told we’re wonderful, we’re saved, we are the life blood of the masses. Or, to put it plainly, we want to know if we’re ok. We’re asking that question every minute of every day in every performance, every interview and every connection in public or private life. Don’t know about you, John, but that can make us kind of hard to live with. I don’t think you had that demon, John.
John: Oh I did, always carried it with me on some level but the benefit to my stay in the Hanoi Hilton is that I knew that there was something bigger, something, someone who would answer the call if I would just pick up the phone. And don’t kid a kidder, Robin, you carried that seeking within your soul.
Robin: Yes, at the heart of everything I did on this planet, but I never found it as securely as you did because I never paid the great price you paid. My salvation was in human connection, and when that connection really happens heart to heart, that is pretty much the same as heavenly intervention - or so it seemed to me.
John: They are the same. I think that is what we are coming here to tell you. God in the sky and God in your hearts are the same, the ultimate gift. It's yours if you want it.
Robin: Amen.
